Three adventures to embark on in the Zambezi Region

Whenever explaining travels, destinations, and the roads leading to adventure in Namibia, my right hand comes out. Palm facing down, index finger folded and thumb stretched out, the back of my hand instantly becomes a map. The shape of Namibia can be indicated with a single hand, and the Zambezi region is the thumb. No coincidence then that this corner of the land, often overlooked or left off visitor itineraries for being so far- flung, can be summarised by “an indication of satisfaction or approval” (a.k.a. “thumbs up”).

“I will be back”

“Never again!” That seems to be the solemn pledge after a five-day stint of hiking the Fish River Canyon. That’s what Eric McLaren thought to himself upon completing the extraordinarily challenging Fish River for the first time. Friends gone fishin’

On a fishing expedition to Meob Bay along Namibia’s southern coastline, Theuns Laubscher and a group of friends discovered the wonders of the vast Namib Sand Sea, a UNESCO Natural World Heritage site. Led by concession guides through the ancient sands and along the skeleton-strewn coast, the group discovered the delicate balance of catch-and-release angling, the thrill of off-road convoys, and the unfiltered camaraderie forged around campfires under an endless sky. This story is not just about fishing; it is about adventure, resilience and the quiet marvels of the Namib, and that magical place where the desert meets the sea.

Finding the fishermen of the sky

Located just 22 kilometres northwest of Mariental, Hardap Dam, which is fed by the Fish River, covers a sprawling 25 square kilometres. While it serves as a vital source of electricity and water for the region, it is also a sanctuary for certain wildlife species, drawing many nature enthusiasts to make a stop here while in the south of Namibia.

Ferns turning in a dance of flight

As I drove down the coast, I stumbled upon a spectacle that felt like nature’s own aerial ballet. A huge group of terns, consisting mostly of Common Terns, their sharp black caps contrasting against the clear blue sky, flitted and dived in synchrony over the sand and surf. With their slender bodies, long, angular wings and graceful flight patterns, watching them was an absolute display of harmony.
