Unique Stays Across Namibia

Some call this the land of milk and honey, others name it the land of endless horizons. Namibia is also fondly known as the land of the brave, or the smile on the face of Africa. Many titles have been attributed to this country by locals and visitors alike, and as a local myself, I’ll biasedly say they’re all true. But if only one word were available to do justice to this beautiful place, it would have to be “unique”.

Slofari: Namibia allows you the time to s-l-o-w down

Slow travel is a mindful approach of taking the time to see less, but experience more. It is about exploring one or two regions rather than sprinting through an entire country merely to tick the boxes. Slow travel is about immersing yourself within a culture to better understand its people and their way of life. It is about partaking in authentic, community-led experiences with those who have the best interests of the environment at heart.

Tracking Namibia’s Endangered Black Rhinos: A Rugged Journey into Damaraland’s Wilderness

It’s a cloudy and crisp morning, still dark. The proverbial rooster has yet to crow. On an open game viewer we go slow and steady down Grootberg mountain. Just as the first light of dawn appears, a soft rain breaks. That is not ideal for rhino tracking but we remain optimistic, and soon enough the rising sun dries up the fine droplets, marking the start of a rugged journey into the habitat of Namibia’s endangered black rhino.

Honeymoon Camping at Epupa Falls

I always had a stereotypical notion of the perfect honeymoon: sandy beaches, scuba diving adventures, perhaps jetting off to somewhere exotic like Zanzibar. It never occurred to me that travelling locally, that camping or even gravel trails could make for a dream honeymoon. For my husband, the latter defined perfection, and so that was what we did. Providently.

Desert Reverie

This is a magical land – the colours, the softness of the dunes and the almost ethereal backdrop that appears to be painted on the horizon for dramatic effect. It is exquisite, and it seems unreal. There is so much to marvel at that one’s worries seem to melt away in the sunlight. What once seemed insurmountable now seems petty, and you find yourself zoning out at the sight of space and beauty all around.

Serene and wide-open

Elephants playfully rolling in the mud on a scorching summer day – a huge herd, with several young ones of various ages. It is a sight of pure joy. I could watch them for hours, captivated by their carefree antics as they fling mud over their backs, the youngest sliding on its belly in the cool, soft earth, and the eager excitement palpable as they run to greet each other.

Return to tranquillity

The main lodge area sets the tone – airy, open and sophisticated without trying too hard. Sunlight filters through the high thatch roof, catching on carefully curated artefacts, warm woods and soft whites. The interiors are a masterclass in understated elegance. Large glass doors invite the outdoors in, and every corner seems designed for comfort and contemplation, from the sink-in sofas to the long communal tables dressed with wildflowers and wine.

Travelling in the footsteps of a conservation legend

Northwestern Namibia is not your average travel destination. In my two years of living like a desert nomad in this remote corner of the country, I encountered many self-driving tourists that would have benefitted greatly from an expert guide. From the Italian couple who couldn’t work out how to get the spare wheel off their car to replace a flat, to the Frenchman stranded in the Skeleton Coast, I was constantly reminded that this area could be dangerous.

Simanya River Lodge

There’s a stretch of Namibia where time slows down to the gentle rhythm of river flow, where the land hums with ancient culture and the sunsets seem to melt straight into the water. On the banks of the Kavango River, in the remote northeast, Simanya River Lodge has quietly redefined luxury in one of the country’s least explored regions.
