Back to Basics

The juxtaposition of Namibia’s landscapes continues to leave me speechless. The northwest, characterised by rocky flat-top and pointy mountains cascading into valleys and then rivers. The deep south, where standing on a hilltop has you overlooking endless stretches of deserted plains. Our coastline, misty and magical, where gemsbok occasionally stroll on the beach. The fingertip of the Caprivi, lined by wondrous waterways, lush greenery and punctuated by rural villages.

Forging a natural masterpiece

There is a symphony that was written between water and rock millions of years ago. Carved into the depths of this land, canyons provide a look into the geological epic that unfolded, a view of the history of Earth and a mesmerising tapestry that showcases the enduring journey this landscape embarked on through the ages. Easily one of Africa’s most impressive geological formations is the Fish River Canyon. It is my first time visiting the canyon, and I am doing so in style, staying at the striking Fish River Lodge that boasts rooms on the western brim of the canyon, far away from the crowds that flock to Namibia’s second-largest tourist attraction.

The Etosha Pan

The Etosha pan is a large endorheic basin, covering an area of approximately 4760 km2 and stretching some 120km from east to west and 55km north to south. This area is so vast that it is visible from space. Most visitors and tourists to Namibia’s flagship park are greeted with stunning sights of the vast, shimmering expanse of the pan as they navigate their way along scenic routes. Every now and again, specks of wildlife can be seen in the distance, traversing parts of the pan, leaving one pondering the fact as to what could possibly draw them to such a seemingly barren, desolate wasteland.

Ecowings: Safeguarding Namibia’s Wildlife Through Aerial Surveillance

Between 17 December 2024 and 7 January 2025, a collective of key conservation partners undertook a vital initiative in Damaraland to combat wildlife crime and strengthen conservation efforts. Through the collaborative Ecowings Namibia initiative, Dr Conrad Brain managed this festive season operation. Dr Brain leads conservation projects supported by Wilderness in Namibia as a member of the Wilderness Impact team. This aerial surveillance project aimed to deter poaching activities during a critical period, protect Namibia’s unique biodiversity, and foster community awareness about conservation.

Designed to inspire and educate the country’s next generation of environmental leaders, the camp provided an immersive experience in conservation, leadership, and adventure.

In the hushed quiet of the afternoon, I found myself at a waterhole, the air alive with the sounds of nature. A soft breeze swirled white dust into the air, the particles dancing in the sunlight, the landscape all around barren and forlorn, yet the stretch of white pan before me is the epicentre of a prolific national park. A distant rumble of thunder hinted at rain, but for now, the drama unfolded under the expanse of an endless sky.

Serene and wide-open

Elephants playfully rolling in the mud on a scorching summer day – a huge herd, with several young ones of various ages. It is a sight of pure joy. I could watch them for hours, captivated by their carefree antics as they fling mud over their backs, the youngest sliding on its belly in the cool, soft earth, and the eager excitement palpable as they run to greet each other.

As I gaze upon the land from a distance, the vastness of the Namib stretches out endlessly before me. Up close, the landscape is an amalgamation of gravelly sand, tufts of dried grass and the stark silhouettes of blackened mountains. Somehow, these simple elements of nature harmonise in perfect balance. It is in the seamless orchestration of all these elements that the beauty is found. Much like a symphony where each note finds its place in a greater whole. In the desert, every individual detail is crucial to the song it sings collectively.
